A Red Sea Island Shaped by Its Landscape
Sheybarah Island is a small island in the Red Sea off the west coast of Saudi Arabia, part of the Red Sea Global destination between Umluj and Al Wajh. It is known for a resort of overwater villas and beachfront suites, designed to sit lightly against the sand and coral. The island's shape, its pale sand and the clear shallow water around it give a sense of seclusion that is rare in the region, and its setting is a very different side of Saudi Arabia from the desert canyons and old towns.
Architecture is part of the draw. The resort's design takes cues from the island's form, with sculptural forms in sand tones and sweeping lines that echo the dunes and the sea, and the villas are arranged so each has a sense of privacy and a view over the lagoon. Compared with the better known resort islands of the Maldives, Sheybarah brings a new name and a new coastline to the premium island category, in a region where the Red Sea itself is the main attraction.
Reef Mornings and Desert Evenings
The sea is the centrepiece. Warm, clear water over coral reefs invites snorkelling straight from the beach or from the overwater villas, and boat trips and diving open up the wider lagoon, where turtles and colourful reef fish are regularly seen. Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks glide across calm shallows in the early morning, and the water is gentle enough for relaxed days beside it.
The Red Sea Global destination also offers experiences beyond the island. Desert excursions, dune drives and stargazing sessions show the other side of this coast, while the resort's dining focuses on fresh seafood and regional flavours. A hotel group or luxury travel designer can pair the island with a stay in AlUla or Jeddah, giving guests a rounded view of the kingdom that moves from heritage to sea in a single journey.
