Reef, Outback and Harbour Cities
Australia is a country and continent in the Southern Hemisphere, known for its coastline, wildlife, Indigenous culture and relaxed, outdoor cities. Canberra is the capital, but Sydney and Melbourne are the best-known gateways. The Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge frame one of the world's most recognisable harbours, while the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, stretches along the Queensland coast. In the centre, Uluru and Kata Tjuta rise from red desert in a landscape sacred to the Anangu people.
Wildlife is part of the welcome. Kangaroos, koalas, wombats and Tasmanian devils are unique to the continent, and whale-watching, penguin parades and reef snorkelling are signature experiences. Food reflects a confident, multicultural kitchen, with outstanding seafood, flat whites, native ingredients and wine regions from the Barossa Valley to Margaret River. Indigenous heritage, among the oldest continuing cultures on Earth, can be experienced through guided walks, rock art sites and cultural centres in Kakadu and across the country.
Great Ocean Road, Daintree and Tasmania
Road trips make the scale feel personal. The Great Ocean Road in Victoria passes the Twelve Apostles limestone stacks, the Blue Mountains rise behind Sydney, and the Daintree Rainforest in Queensland meets the reef at Cape Tribulation. Tasmania adds Cradle Mountain and Freycinet's Wineglass Bay, and Western Australia offers the pink-sanded coast near Broome and the whale sharks of Ningaloo Reef. Beaches such as Bondi, Whitehaven in the Whitsundays and Cable Beach make the shoreline a destination in its own right.
City stays add culture. Melbourne is known for laneway cafés, street art and sport, Sydney for harbour life, Perth for its sunsets and Brisbane for riverside leisure. A hotel group or island resort can pitch directly to travellers looking for reef-edge, vineyard or desert lodges. Many visitors combine a trip with neighbouring New Zealand or the islands of Fiji, making Australia a natural anchor for a longer Pacific holiday.
